Entry: Keon Clark in for a Look Thursday, September 23, 2004



It appears that the Cleveland Cavaliers have managed to track down the elusive 6-11, 220 pound Center Keon Clark. Clark is scheduled to arrive in Cleveland today for a private workout with the club. 

The Cavaliers have been in search of a back up center to Zydrunas Ilgauskas since the Grizzlies matched the offer for Jake Tsakalidis two weeks ago and their obvious disappointment in DeSagana Diop's progress as an NBA Center.

Clark after playing in only 2 games with the Utah Jazz last season was traded to the Phoenix Suns where he failed to appear at all.

Though Clark could be signed as early as today there is other talk that Scott Williams remains a possibility. Although older and not as athletic as Clark, some on the coaching staff would prefer Williams to Clark.

With PF Malone in retirement, Keon Clark is by far the top free agent Powerforward or Center in the professional ranks. Even with the question of his commitment (and irrationality) I would be surprised if he is not taken by the February deadline to sign players and have them eligible for the playoffs.

Besides Keon Clark and the retired here is a ranking of the top PF and C prospects to show how bleak it is to find a quality PF/C.

1) Oliver Miller (Managed just 2 minutes per game in the playoffs for Minnesota despite backing up the worst center rotation of all playoff teams. Despite half of Minnesota's Center minutes this season actually being used by a legitmate center, he has not been called up, let alone invited to any training camp).

2) Gary Trent (Despite providing a strong rebounding presence for the T'Wolves in years past he stands only 6'7", and with age his skills have decline. They declined so much that he wasn't even offered a 10-day contract by the Chicago Bulls, the worst team in the NBA. Trent will NEVER play a full season on the roster of ANY NBA team again.

3) Ruben Boumtje Boumtje (Probably the worst 7 footer on NBA rosters last season. His efforts were pathetic as he played about 20 minutes over the entire season. Even for a #50 pick he was a mistake)

4) Sean Rooks (Rooks had probably the worst per-48 minute stats in REBOUNDING of any 6' 10" player in the NBA. Once a strong inside presence as an 11th man, he no longer has the mobility to be on a 15 man roster. Will NEVER spend a full season on an NBA roster again.)

5. Ben Handolgten (Handolgten is the #5 big man although he is unavailable this season due to injury - go figure)

6. Marcus Haislip (Young, athletic, pathetic statistics. Doubtful to be a star in the minor leagues).

7. Lonny Baxter (in the last year waived by the Bulls, Hawks, and Bobcats, the three worst teams in the NBA. Nobody wants this guy)

8. Mengke Bateer (Perhaps the worst foreign big man in the NBA in recent years. While his defensive stats were decent, he is slow and uncoordinated. His lack of coordination makes him the quickest player to fowl out in the NBA as he usually commits 3 fouls in the 10 minutes he plays.

9. Dennis Rodman (an undersized (6'7"), overage (44), PF with questionable commitment, let alone sanity. Maybe he could join a team like the Nets that has trouble attracting fans - they could paint his hair rainbow colors and let him be the mascot for a few games.

10. Olden Polynice (Had trouble staying on the CLIPPERS roster last year. Got arrested for impersonating a police officer. If he is signed, I make a motion he be charged for impersonating a BASKETBALL PLAYER.

Now, as you see outside of the unretirement of Karl Malone, Keon Clark is the TOP free agent center in the NBA. If he regains his top form his contributions could make him one of the top 6th men in the Eatern conference.
